- Have a Plan. This seems pretty obvious, but many times people attend the gym without a clear enough idea of what they want to do. Our mind needs to know where it wants to go, how to act, and what destination to pursue ( Chip and Dan Heath “Switch, How to Change Things When Change is Hard”).
- As part of this plan, include Sources of Feedback that can measure your performance as you go along. Preferably, these sources will be on demand and just in time (James Paul Gee “What Video Games Have To Teach Us About Learning and Literacy”).to give us the right information about how we are progressing. These sources may include a timer, or the next level.
- After all of this effort or work, will I have made any Progress? The journey is a long one, but I need to know if I am getting any closer to the end, if there is an end in sight. Also, will I have learned something new about myself, about my current limits and what is possible? That is, is there any value in what I am doing?
