As I mentioned in my previous post about the challenge, it is very challenging to see the end goal, unless I am given a nudge. If I go to a carwash and the owner tells me that if I want a free carwash I will need to come ten more times, that will be too far in the future. I will have a picture in my head of what it might look like, but I will not know what it will be like to get there. If the owner can give me a nudge to start with, two carwashes already ticked off on my ticket, then I can feel that I am on my way and that ten is not so far away, the end begins to feel more realistic and achievable.
Another way of experiencing success and making progress is to achieve small wins. Again, the goal is too far away, I can perceive it, but cannot experience it. If I am asked to clean the house, it will seem a daunting task. I will be overwhelmed with all the tidying and cleaning I will have to do, and nothing will ever be so tidy and clean. However, if I start with one room at a time and gradually move from room to room, I might reach the end. In essence, I am feeding myself little drops of Dopamine. As I finish each room, I can see and feel a sense of achievement, and this makes me feel good!
A third way of experiencing success is if there is some form of measuring, an external measuring, that will indicate my progress. This can be a Leaderboard.
